BELLWEATHER. The Bellweather Heritage Society's annual "Heritage Matters" gala drew a full house to the Riverside Community Centre on Saturday evening, raising a record $120,000 for the restoration of the town's historic landmarks.

Proceeds from the evening will support ongoing work at the Bellweather County Courthouse, the Vale Mill site, and several Front Street heritage buildings, organizers said.

"Every dollar raised tonight keeps a piece of Bellweather standing for the next generation," said Society president Evelyn Shaw, who thanked the evening's sponsors and volunteers.

The keynote was to be delivered by developer and long-time Society patron Daniel Mercer, whose company has partnered with the town on several restoration projects. Mr. Mercer spoke briefly before the live auction and left the event later that evening.

The Society's silent auction, catering, and entertainment were donated by local businesses. A full list of sponsors appears on the Society's website.

The Heritage Society's next public meeting is scheduled for later this month; details will be posted at the library and the courthouse annex.
