Harriet Vale, 91

Peacefully, at Bellweather, on Tuesday, October 1, 2024. Predeceased by her husband Thomas. Harriet kept the ledgers at the mill office for thirty-one years and was, by her own account, the only person who ever found them interesting. She will be missed by her family and by the Thursday bridge table.

A service will be held at the Community Centre on Saturday, October 12, at 11 a.m. Donations to the Heritage Society gratefully received.

Arthur Penney, 78

Suddenly, at home, on Friday, September 27, 2024. Arthur drove the Front Street route for twenty-two years and knew every dog on it by name. Survived by his sister Rose, of Perth.

Two hours is not enough

Sir — The new two-hour limit on Market Square was decided, we are told, after consultation. I have kept a shop on the square for nineteen years and was not consulted, nor was the butcher, nor was anyone I have asked since. A customer who cannot park cannot buy. I would ask council to say plainly who was consulted, and when.

R. Chen, Bellweather

On deferring the mill

Sir — Your report of the deferred vote treats delay as failure. It is not. The Vale Mill site has stood for sixty years and will stand another six months while the questions about its title are answered properly. Those of us who remember the last time the town was hurried into a decision on that land are content to wait.

M. Cole, Bellweather
