BELLWEATHER. Police are investigating the suspicious disappearance of prominent local developer Daniel Mercer after his vehicle was discovered early Sunday morning near former mill lands along the Rideau River.
Mercer, founder and principal of Mercer Developments, was last seen leaving the Bellweather Heritage Society's "Heritage Matters" fundraiser at the Riverside Community Centre at approximately 9:17 p.m. on Saturday, according to witnesses. Family members reported him missing early Sunday when he did not return home and could not be reached by phone.
Bellweather Police Service have launched an investigation and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Vehicle located near former mill lands
On Sunday morning, police located Mercer's black Ford Explorer near the old riverside mill property off Vale Mill Road. The area was immediately secured while officers conducted an initial search, supported by OPP resources including a K-9 unit and a drone.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and no further details are being released at this time.
Police treat case as suspicious
While police have not released details about what may have led to Mercer's disappearance, investigators say they are treating the case as suspicious.
"Our priorities right now are to locate Mr. Mercer and understand the circumstances of his disappearance," said a spokesperson for Bellweather Police Service.
Community in shock
News of Mercer's disappearance has shocked Bellweather, where Mercer is a well-known business leader and long-time supporter of local heritage initiatives.
"Daniel is a pillar of this community," said Mayor Caroline Whitmore. "Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time."
The fundraiser, which supports local heritage projects, raised more than $120,000 on Saturday evening, organizers said.
Police appeal for information. Anyone who attended the Bellweather Heritage Fundraiser on Saturday evening, or who may have seen Daniel Mercer after 9:00 p.m., is asked to contact Bellweather Police Service at 613-555-0199 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
